Manchester City continued their push for the Premier League title with a win at Turf Moor, moving Pep Guardiola’s side to the top of the table and sending Burnley back to the Championship.
City are in strong form at the right time, closing a nine-point gap on Arsenal in under two weeks to go top on goal difference. They had not been top since the opening week of the season, but an 11-game unbeaten run has helped them overtake the Gunners with five matches left.
Erling Haaland, City’s top scorer, gave them an early lead after five minutes, finishing calmly from Jeremy Doku’s assist. He later hit the post in the second half. City also came close through Rayan Cherki, whose powerful shot was saved onto the crossbar by Martin Dubravka.
Despite creating many chances, City missed opportunities, with Nico O’Reilly and Rayan Ait-Nouri also failing to score. They know goal difference could still be important in the title race.
Burnley also had chances, with Jaidon Anthony and Zian Flemming both going close, but they couldn’t find a breakthrough.
The defeat confirms that Scott Parker’s Burnley will be relegated to the Championship, joining bottom side Wolves, just two years after their last promotion.
