Coco Gauff showed remarkable resilience to defeat Sorana Cirstea and reach the last 16 of the Madrid Open, despite battling illness.
The American third seed struggled with a stomach virus throughout the match and was visibly unwell, even needing to pause during the second set. At one stage, she trailed by a set and a break, but dug deep to turn the contest around and claim a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory.
After receiving medical attention, Gauff gradually regained composure and strength, dominating the deciding set as Cirstea faded. Her determination saw her overcome both her opponent and physical discomfort in difficult conditions.
The win continues Gauff’s consistent form in Madrid, where she has now reached the fourth round for the third consecutive year. She will next face Linda Noskova as she builds momentum ahead of the French Open, where she is the defending champion.
