Anfield fell quiet when Anthony Gordon scored for Newcastle and pointed to his ear towards the Liverpool fans. His well-taken goal in the 36th minute put Newcastle ahead and raised hopes of a rare win at Anfield.
But Liverpool were not about to let that happen. Hugo Ekitike took charge of the game, scoring twice before half-time to turn things around. His quick goals swung the match in Liverpool’s favour and delighted manager Arne Slot as his side went on to win 4-1.
Slot praised Ekitike after the game, saying fans could immediately see how special and fast he is. The goals were exactly the kind Newcastle had admired for years, having tried to sign the 23-year-old forward three times.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe admitted Ekitike made the difference. While he felt his team could have defended better, he praised the Frenchman’s all-round ability, calling him tall, quick and a natural finisher.
