Former Chelsea and Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling has joined Dutch side Feyenoord on a deal until the end of the season.

The England international left Chelsea in January by mutual consent after agreeing a settlement over the final 18 months of his contract, worth more than £300,000 per week.

Sterling, 31, considered several options before deciding on Feyenoord, who are second in the Eredivisie and managed by former Manchester United and Arsenal striker Robin van Persie.

“As a free agent, I’ve had the chance to choose my next step,” Sterling said. “I wanted to speak with clubs and coaches to understand my role and make sure I can contribute. After talking with Robin, I feel Feyenoord is the right place. Playing abroad is a new challenge, and I’m ready for it. I’m excited to get started.”

Feyenoord are 17 points behind league leaders PSV. Van Persie said: “It’s fantastic to bring in a player of Raheem’s quality. He can change games and will be a big help as we aim for our goals this season.”

Sources told BBC Sport that about 18 clubs in England and Europe showed interest in Sterling. He was convinced to join Feyenoord by the chance to play in a competitive league, aim for Champions League qualification, and Van Persie’s plan for his role in the team.
