Real Madrid midfielder Caroline Weir has been officially named Scotland captain ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg. Weir had already captained Scotland in six recent matches and now takes on the role full-time, with Erin Cuthbert confirmed as vice-captain.
The 28-year-old replaces former captain Rachel Corsie, who retired in June due to ongoing knee pain. Scotland will play Luxembourg away on 3 March before hosting them four days later.
Weir said she is proud and honoured to captain Scotland and is excited to lead the team during their qualification journey to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. Head coach Melissa Andreatta said the decision was made after spending time getting to know the squad and choosing the player who best represents the team.
Hibernian forward Kathleen McGovern and Charlton defender Charlotte Newsham are included in the squad, while Liverpool’s Martha Thomas and Rangers’ Leah Eddie miss out. Scotland begin their qualifiers knowing every match will be crucial in their push to reach Brazil 2027.
