Buttler says cricket is slow to let Coaches help on the Field

England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler says cricket is behind the times when it comes to innovation and how much coaches can influence on-field decisions.

During England’s win over Nepal, coach Brendon McCullum was seen sending messages from the dressing room via a walkie-talkie to captain Harry Brook on the field. Buttler, who played in the IPL with Gujarat, said other sports like rugby allow coaches to be more active during games, and cricket may catch up.

McCullum has been using walkie-talkies in recent weeks, including during England’s tour of Sri Lanka, to send observations and advice to players on the pitch. Buttler explained that it’s just a clearer way for the coach to communicate key instructions to the captain and bowlers during matches.
