Real Madrid have started an investigation after a fan allegedly made a Nazi salute before their Champions League win against Benfica at the Bernabeu.
The supporter was spotted on TV making the gesture before kick-off and was quickly identified by security and removed from the stadium. Real Madrid said they have asked their disciplinary committee to begin the process of expelling the fan, adding that they condemn any gestures that promote violence or hatred.
The incident happened during Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Benfica, which secured a 3-1 aggregate victory and a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
It comes shortly after Vinicius Jr alleged he was racially abused by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni in the first leg. Prestianni, who denied the accusation, was given a provisional one-match ban and missed the return game.
Before kick-off, fans displayed a “no to racism” banner in support of Vinicius, and Aurelien Tchouameni said the victory was for everyone who stands against racism.
