Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes inspired his team to a hard-earned win over Crystal Palace as they kicked off the new year on a positive note. After a tight first half where chances were missed and two Newcastle goals were ruled out, the game looked set to end in a draw.
Guimaraes broke the deadlock late on, rising above his marker to head past Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson and give Newcastle the lead. He then played a key role in the second goal, delivering a dangerous corner that led to Malick Thiaw scoring.
The win lifts Newcastle above Crystal Palace in the league table and up to ninth place. Palace drop to 14th and are now without a win in seven matches in all competitions.
