Coco Gauff has called for more player privacy after footage showed her smashing a racquet following her Australian Open quarter-final defeat by Elina Svitolina.
The 21-year-old American was beaten 6-1 6-2 and was filmed breaking her racquet away from the court in a players-only area. The video was later shared on TV and social media, which Gauff said should not have happened.
Gauff explained she tried to keep her emotions private and compared the situation to a similar incident involving Aryna Sabalenka at the 2023 US Open. She said the locker room should be one of the few places where players are not filmed.
Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash backed Gauff’s comments, saying players need more private spaces during emotionally demanding tournaments.
