Oxford United have sacked head coach Gary Rowett as the club struggles in the Championship relegation zone. The U's have won only one of their last 10 games and are just two points above the drop. Rowett, 51, had been in charge for a year, winning 14 and losing 21 of his 50 matches.
He helped Oxford survive last season in the Championship, but a poor run this term, scoring only 22 goals with Tottenham loanee Will Lanskhear as top scorer with five, has forced the club to act. His assistant Mark Sale has also left, with Craig Short now interim head coach alongside Chris Hackett and Lewis Price.
Chairman Grant Ferguson said Rowett “deserves immense credit” for last season’s survival but added the decision was made “in the best interests of the club.” Oxford hope the change will help them avoid relegation, as they sit just above the bottom three with a tough season still ahead.
