Newcastle United want an explanation after a penalty appeal against Chelsea was turned down. In Saturday’s 2-2 Premier League draw at St James’ Park, Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah pushed Anthony Gordon to the ground, but referee Andy Madley and VAR decided not to award a penalty.
Head coach Eddie Howe called it a “stonewall” penalty and said the club just wants to understand why the decision was made. Newcastle were leading 2-1 at the time, but Chelsea equalised after a defensive slip.
The team has dropped more points from winning positions than anyone else this season and will face Manchester United on 26 December. Howe said the squad is improving but still needs to become more consistent in winning games.
