Anderson set to become Lancashire’s red-ball captain in 2026

Lancashire have named Sir James Anderson as their Championship (red-ball) captain for 2026.

Anderson, who is now 43, led the team in five games last summer, performed well, and has now been given the job full-time after signing a new one-year contract.

England’s all-time Test wicket-taker, Anderson has taken 1,143 wickets in 304 first-class matches since he started in 2002.
Josh Bohannon will be the vice-captain, while Keaton Jennings stays on as Lancashire’s T20 Blast captain.

Although Anderson played his final England Test in 2024, he continued with Lancashire. Last season was difficult for the club with coaching changes and Jennings stepping down as red-ball captain. Anderson stepped in when Marcus Harris went back to Australia and guided Lancashire to two wins, two draws and one defeat, lifting team morale.

He will now work with new head coach Steven Croft to try to take Lancashire back to Division One after their relegation in 2024.

Anderson said captaining the team was a “huge privilege” and that he’s excited about leading a strong squad with “promotion back to Division One” as the main target.
