World Cup: I’m confused – Rio Ferdinand reacts as Southgate snubs ex-Chelsea star

Rio Ferdinand has questioned the absence of AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori in the England squad for the 2022 World Cup.

Rio Ferdinand told FIVE: “The biggest thing I’d like to know is what was said to him[Tomori]. Why was he not taken and what were the reasons for it?”

Gareth Southgate announced his 26-man squad for the tournament on Thursday and has received backslashes for including Manchester United captain, Harry Maguire.

Maguire, who is going through the most difficult period in his football career, has been reduced to a bench warmer in Manchester United as Erik ten Hag would rather play Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in his central defense.

Despite his struggles, Southgate has kept faith in him and would rather have him in his team than Tomori, who is one of the best centre-backs in the Italian Serie A.

“I’m sitting here confused thinking that we’re way behind those teams…” Ferdinand added and went on to advise the aggrieved players to use the disappointment as motivation.

The former England defender said the disappointed players should put Southgate’s pictures on their walls, “every wall in your house, and you use that as fuel. That’s what I think.”

“That catapulted me to being more professional, more driven. I used it as fuel. I don’t think that you can let that derail off your journey of becoming a top player.”
