Wakefield Crush Castleford to Strengthen Top-Four Push

0

Wakefield Trinity strengthened their push for a top-four Super League finish with a ruthless 50-4 demolition of Castleford Tigers at Hill Dickinson Stadium, running in nine tries in a dominant display.

Daryl Powell's side climbed to third in the standings on 24 points after recording their sixth victory in seven matches, while Castleford endured a miserable afternoon marked by defensive errors and missed tackles.

Cameron Scott, Tom Johnstone and Caleb Hamlin-Uele each grabbed a brace, with Lachlan Walmsley, Tyson Smoothy and Josh Rourke also crossing the whitewash as Wakefield overwhelmed their local rivals from start to finish.

Jason Qareqare scored a late consolation try for Castleford with just a minute remaining, preventing the visitors from being held scoreless.

Wakefield made the perfect start, capitalising on Castleford's mistakes as Walmsley gathered Jake Trueman's kick and offloaded for Scott to touch down in the third minute.

The hosts dominated possession and territory throughout the opening half, having two tries disallowed before Johnstone finished in the corner in the 16th minute.

Hamlin-Uele added a third after powering through two defenders from close range, before Scott collected Jack Sinfield's pass and cut inside for his second try to extend the lead to 20-0.

Wakefield continued their relentless assault after the break. Walmsley celebrated an acrobatic finish by producing an Uno card from his sock, while Smoothy crashed over moments later after bursting through the Castleford defence.

Hamlin-Uele completed his double with another straightforward finish before Johnstone crossed for his second following slick passing from a scrum.

Rourke rounded off Wakefield's try-fest by gathering Sinfield's kick to score their ninth try of the afternoon.

Qareqare maintained his fine scoring form by touching down late for his 10th try in seven matches, but it proved little more than a consolation for a Castleford side that struggled throughout, missing 44 tackles in a one-sided contest.

The emphatic victory reinforces Wakefield's credentials as genuine top-four contenders, while Castleford are left searching for answers after one of their heaviest defeats of the campaign.
