Rangers manager Derek McInnes has backed Nigerian defender Emmanuel Fernandez to play an even bigger role for the Scottish giants during the 2026/27 season after an impressive debut campaign at Ibrox.
Fernandez, who joined Rangers from Peterborough United last summer, quickly established himself as a key member of the squad despite the scrutiny surrounding his arrival. The defender contributed six goals in 33 appearances across all competitions, although Rangers narrowly missed out on the Scottish Premiership title.
Speaking to Rangers View, McInnes praised Fernandez's development while acknowledging the expectations that accompanied his transfer, alongside fellow young signing Youssef Chermiti.
"Both of them are relatively young, and they came with a lot of expectations on them with the price tag and the kind of profile," McInnes said.
The Rangers boss added that every player who joins the Glasgow club is expected to compete for trophies, while stressing that young players also need time to develop and fulfil their potential.
McInnes believes Fernandez has shown the qualities required to become an even more influential figure for Rangers as the club prepares for the new campaign.
