Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi believes Stanley Nwabali's return to South African club Chippa United could pave the way for his recall to the national team, insisting that a lack of regular club football was the main reason behind his recent omission from Eric Chelle's squad.
Nwabali established himself as Nigeria's first-choice goalkeeper during the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d'Ivoire, helping the Super Eagles reach the final. He retained the No. 1 spot through the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where his performances helped Nigeria secure a record-extending ninth bronze medal.
However, the goalkeeper has not featured for the national team since leaving Chippa United by mutual consent in February. He missed Nigeria's triumphant 2026 Unity Cup campaign, as well as subsequent international friendlies against Poland and Portugal, with Francis Uzoho, Arthur Okonkwo and Maduka Okoye all earning opportunities in his absence.
Speaking to FARPost, Akpeyi said Nwabali's quality and previous performances for the Super Eagles should put him in a strong position to reclaim his place once he regains full match sharpness.
"He has been excellent, absolutely excellent. Faultless for Nigeria. He has taken them to places and performed consistently well for the Super Eagles. A lot can change in a season. Football is so fluid.
"I know he will regain his form and earn the trust of the coaches again. Once that happens, he will rise quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if he is Nigeria's number one again in the next few games," Akpeyi said.
