Morocco have become Africa’s highest-earning national team across the last two FIFA World Cups, collecting a combined $58 million in prize money from their historic 2022 and 2026 campaigns.
The Atlas Lions earned $31.5 million for reaching the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding to the $26.5 million they received for their fourth-place finish at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The 2026 earnings comprised a $10 million participation fee, a $2.5 million preparation grant, and $19 million in performance-based prize money for advancing to the last eight.
Morocco’s latest achievement underscores the country's growing consistency on football’s biggest stage. They became the first African and Arab nation to reach a FIFA World Cup semi-final in 2022 before following it up with another impressive quarter-final run in 2026.
Their 2026 campaign came to an end with a 2-0 defeat to France in the quarter-finals on Thursday. Goals from Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé secured victory for Les Bleus, who eliminated the Atlas Lions by the same scoreline that ended Morocco’s historic run in the 2022 semi-finals.
France, appearing in a third consecutive World Cup semi-final, will face Spain in the last four.
Among the other African nations at the 2026 tournament, Egypt finished second in earnings after collecting $17.5 million for reaching the Round of 16. Senegal, Algeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, South Africa and Ghana each received $13.5 million for their participation.
