The Egyptian Football Association has lodged an official complaint with FIFA, calling for an investigation into the officiating team following Egypt's dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
In a statement, EFA president Hany Aburida accused French referee François Letexier and his team of making serious errors and applying double standards that contributed to the Pharaohs' elimination.
Egypt's frustration centred on a disallowed Mostafa Ziko goal after a VAR review identified an earlier foul on Lisandro MartÃnez. Although Ziko later restored Egypt's two-goal advantage, Argentina fought back through Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi before Enzo Fernández scored the winner.
The EFA also argued that Egypt should have been awarded a penalty in the build-up to Argentina's decisive goal, claiming Alexis Mac Allister fouled Hamdy Fathy.
Aburida urged FIFA to investigate the entire refereeing team, including the VAR officials, and called for their removal from the remainder of the tournament if the alleged officiating errors are confirmed.
