Guillermo Ochoa is in line to make history after being named in Mexico’s 26-man squad for this summer’s World Cup, with the goalkeeper targeting a record sixth appearance at the tournament.
The 40-year-old has joined Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as one of the few players selected for six World Cups, having first featured on the global stage in Germany in 2006. Ochoa, who spent last season with Cypriot side AEL Limassol, has seen limited international action in recent years but remains a key figure in Mexico’s squad.
Fulham striker Raúl Jiménez also features in Javier Aguirre’s squad, which will be captained by West Ham midfielder Edson Álvarez.
Teenager Gilberto Mora, just 17, is set to make history as Mexico’s youngest-ever World Cup player, while Armando González and several emerging talents, including Obed Vargas and Brian Gutiérrez, also make the cut.
Aguirre has also included naturalised players Álvaro Fidalgo and Julián Quiñones as Mexico prepare to co-host the tournament alongside the United States and Canada.
Mexico face South Africa in the World Cup opener on 11 June at the Estadio Azteca, before group games against South Korea and the Czech Republic.
