Manchester City and Chelsea continue talks over Enzo Maresca

Manchester City and Chelsea remain in advanced talks over a compensation package for Enzo Maresca, who has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola announced on 22 May that he would step down after a trophy-laden decade at Manchester City, with Maresca quickly identified as the club’s preferred successor.

The 46-year-old, who won the Club World Cup and Conference League during his spell at Chelsea before leaving in January, is understood to be keen on a return to the Etihad.

Chelsea believe they are entitled to compensation, as Maresca was under contract until 2029 and departed the club only six months ago. The London side are exploring their legal options and expect a settlement to be reached, although the size and timing of any agreement remain unclear.

Maresca previously worked under Guardiola as part of City’s coaching staff during the club’s historic Treble-winning 2022-23 season and also played a key role in the academy setup.

Before joining Chelsea, the former West Bromwich Albion and Juventus midfielder guided Leicester City back to the Premier League in his only season in charge.
