Former England striker Michael Owen has defended Cristiano Ronaldo amid growing criticism, backing the Portuguese superstar to respond in style and match Lionel Messi’s impact at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
Ronaldo came under scrutiny after Portugal's 1-1 draw with DR Congo in their Group K opener on June 17, a result that drew even greater attention because it came just a day after Messi scored a hat-trick in Argentina’s opening victory over Algeria.
Despite the criticism, Owen remains confident that the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus forward will soon rediscover his best form.
Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, Owen said: “Cristiano Ronaldo’s situation was not helped by Lionel Messi’s hat-trick the night before Portugal’s match, but I refuse to join in with the criticism aimed at him.
“How many times has this happened before? How many times has he found himself in a similar position and then silenced his critics in the very next game?
“If you pick Ronaldo, you have to accept the role he plays in the team. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if he responds with a hat-trick against Uzbekistan.”
However, Ronaldo’s statistics from Portugal’s opening match make for difficult reading. The 41-year-old failed to register a shot on target from his three attempts and struggled to impose himself on the game.
The outing also extended his goal drought in major tournaments to 10 consecutive appearances, adding further pressure ahead of Portugal’s next group-stage fixture.
