Egypt on Monday became the fourth African nation to record a victory at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Pharaohs came from behind to defeat New Zealand 3-1 in their second Group G fixture at BC Place in Vancouver.
Goals from Mostafa Ziko, Mohamed Salah and Trezeguet sealed all three points for the North Africans after they had fallen behind earlier in the match.
The victory marked Egypt’s first win of the tournament, having opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Belgium.
Egypt now join Ivory Coast, Ghana and Morocco as the only African teams to have recorded victories at the tournament so far.
Ivory Coast became the first African side to win a match at the World Cup after defeating Ecuador 1-0 in their opening fixture. Ghana followed suit with a 1-0 victory over Panama, while Morocco secured Africa’s third win with a 1-0 triumph over Scotland in Group C.
Meanwhile, several African representatives are still searching for their first victories of the tournament, including Senegal, Cape Verde, DR Congo, Algeria, South Africa and Tunisia.
