Former Super Eagles forward Victor Ikpeba has criticized the use of VAR following Arsenal F.C.’s controversial 1-0 Premier League victory over West Ham United F.C..
Ikpeba expressed frustration with the officiating decisions during the match, insisting that the Video Assistant Referee system is “failing football” because of inconsistent judgments and controversial calls. The former African Player of the Year argued that some key incidents in the game should have been reviewed differently, claiming West Ham were unfairly treated.
The controversy centered around a disputed goal and several penalty appeals that sparked debate among fans and pundits after the final whistle. Arsenal eventually secured all three points, but the result was overshadowed by criticism of the match officials and the role of VAR in influencing the outcome.
Speaking during a football analysis programme, Ikpeba said the technology was introduced to reduce mistakes, but instead it continues to create confusion and anger among players, coaches and supporters. According to him, inconsistent interpretations of the rules are damaging the credibility of officiating in the Premier League.
Despite the criticism, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta defended his team’s performance, insisting his side deserved the victory after dominating large parts of the encounter. The win further strengthened Arsenal’s position in the title race, while West Ham were left frustrated by the controversial decisions.
The debate around VAR has remained one of the biggest talking points in English football this season, with several clubs and former players repeatedly questioning the consistency of officiating decisions across the league.
