RCD Mallorca boosted their survival hopes with a crucial 1-0 victory away at Girona FC, tightening an already intense relegation battle in La Liga.
A first-half header from Samú Costa proved decisive, as Mallorca secured their first away win since October and moved above Girona on goal difference into 15th place in the 20-team table. Both sides remain just four points clear of the relegation zone, underlining how tight the fight for survival has become.
The visitors were the stronger side in the opening 45 minutes and took the lead seconds before half-time. Costa was left unmarked in the box to head home Johan Mojica’s lofted cross from the left flank, giving Mallorca a deserved advantage.
Girona improved after the break and pressed for an equaliser, but were denied by the woodwork and a series of saves from Mallorca goalkeeper Leo Román as the visitors held firm under pressure.
After the match, Girona veteran Cristhian Stuani admitted the result was a blow, saying: “It’s getting more difficult. We have to grit our teeth and give it everything.”
The result leaves multiple teams separated by just a handful of points in a fiercely congested lower half of the table, with only six points separating 11th-placed Rayo Vallecano from second-bottom Levante.
