Tyler Fletcher, son of Manchester United coach Darren Fletcher, was initially set to travel with his father and twin brother Jack to support Scotland in the United States this summer. Instead, he has now been called up to Scotland’s senior squad by manager Steve Clarke after only 17 minutes of first-team football for Manchester United.
The 19-year-old midfielder, who made just two late substitute appearances for United this season, including a brief cameo against Brighton on the final day of the Premier League campaign, earned his surprise selection after impressing during Scotland’s training camp last week.
Fletcher was initially brought in to gain experience at international level, but quickly stood out to coaches with his professionalism and maturity. His performances in training and a composed showing in a pre-tournament friendly against Curacao convinced Clarke to include him in the squad.
His rise comes despite a challenging season for the Fletcher family, with setbacks across youth competitions and Manchester United academy finals. Tyler, however, emerged as a standout performer, winning United’s Under-21 Player of the Year award and edging ahead in his development pathway.
Now, instead of watching from the stands, Fletcher will be part of Scotland’s World Cup journey — a remarkable turnaround that highlights his rapid rise through the ranks.
