Barcelona agree £69m deal for Gordon

Barcelona have agreed a deal worth more than £69m with Newcastle United for England forward Anthony Gordon.

BBC Sport previously reported that the clubs were in advanced talks as they worked towards reaching an agreement on a fee. Those discussions were described as positive, and a deal has now been struck worth in excess of €80m (£69.3m).

Gordon will now complete the formalities of his move before joining up with his England team-mates for a training camp in the United States ahead of the World Cup.

Bayern Munich also held formal talks with Newcastle, but there was a gap in valuation between the two clubs, allowing Barcelona to submit the acceptable bid.

Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson had previously stated in March that the club would only sell players “on our terms”.

The Magpies were in a strong negotiating position, with Gordon under contract until 2030, allowing them to command a significant fee.

Despite a disappointing 12th-place finish in the Premier League, Newcastle are expected to reinvest heavily in the transfer market, with this deal helping fund their summer rebuild — even after Everton’s sell-on clause is taken into account.

Everton are set to receive 15% of any profit Newcastle make from the sale of Gordon, whom they originally signed from their academy in a deal worth up to £45m in 2023.

Gordon had long been viewed as one of the more likely departures among Newcastle’s key players. The club’s top scorer was even left on the bench for the final four matches of the season, as head coach Eddie Howe looked ahead to future planning.

Supporters in the away end were heard singing Gordon’s name following the 2-0 defeat at Fulham on the final day of the season, in what appeared to be a farewell gesture.
