Sha'Carri Richardson overcame a huge disadvantage to win the Stawell Gift, becoming only the third woman ever to win from the back of the field.
Starting from the “scratch” mark (no head start), Richardson had to run the full 120m and chase down every runner. She did just that, finishing in 13.08 seconds — the fastest women’s time in the event’s 148-year history.
She narrowly beat Australia’s Charlotte Nielsen, who had a nine-metre head start, to win the A$40,000 prize.
Richardson said she knew she would win before the finish line, calling the race one of the most exciting events she has ever competed in.
In the men’s race, Olufemi Komolafe claimed victory, while Christian Coleman was knocked out in the semi-finals.
