Gianluca Rocchi, head of referee assignments in Italy’s top flight, has suspended himself after being placed under investigation for alleged sporting fraud.
The former international referee is reportedly under scrutiny over decisions in the 2024-25 season, with claims involving referee selection, VAR interventions, and match incidents in Serie A.
The move follows action by the Italian Referees Association, which confirmed both Rocchi and VAR supervisor Andrea Gervasoni have stepped aside while investigations continue.
Rocchi said he made the decision to allow the legal process to proceed smoothly, insisting he expects to be cleared as the case develops.
