Wales captain Angharad James says the team has a first Women’s World Cup "in their sights" as they start their qualification campaign in Brazil with a match against the Czech Republic on Tuesday.
Wales face a tough path to reach the 2027 World Cup, needing to finish in the top three of Group B1, then win play-offs and possibly an inter-confederation tie. James admits the process is “a little bit complex” but says the team is motivated by the chance to make a World Cup debut.
The opening fixture against the Czechs, ranked just above Wales at 31st in the world, is expected to be challenging. James says Wales must focus on each game and counter the Czech team’s direct style if they want to get the result they need.
