Southampton Shock Top-ranked Coventry to Strengthen Their Play-off Push

0

Southampton are now just three points away from the Championship play-off spots after beating league leaders Coventry City at home, handing Coventry only their second home defeat this season.

Flynn Downes, playing his 100th game for the Saints, scored from a rebound in the second half to give them the lead, and Kuryu Matsuki added a late second goal to keep Southampton on a 10-game unbeaten run.

Coventry, who were chasing a record seven wins in a row, had chances to equalise. Liam Kitching was denied by a brilliant save from goalkeeper Daniel Peretz, and top scorer Haji Wright went close twice before leaving the pitch with a groin injury. Victor Torp scored a late penalty, but Coventry couldn’t find a winner.

Southampton’s rise under manager Tonda Eckert has been impressive, moving from 21st to 7th in the league, with 13 wins in 24 games and progress to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The match saw both sides create chances. Coventry’s Josh Eccles delivered a good cross to Kitching, but Peretz made a brilliant save. Wright volleyed just wide before halftime. After the break, Matsuki set up the first goal, and Downes scored on the rebound. Matsuki then added a second from close range, and although Coventry scored a penalty in added time, Southampton held on for the win.
