Inter Milan gave AC Milan a chance to get back in the Serie A title race after a late goal from Atalanta meant the game ended 1-1, marking Inter’s second match in a row without a win.
Pio Esposito put Inter ahead in the 26th minute with a low shot that got past Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi. Atalanta were upset the goal counted, saying Inter’s Denzel Dumfries had fouled a player during the build-up.
Later, Dumfries was frustrated when Nikola Krstovic scored for Atalanta in the 82nd minute. Dumfries fell under pressure from Kamaldeen Sulemana, whose shot was saved by Inter keeper Yann Sommer but fell to Krstovic, who finished. VAR didn’t cancel the goal, which angered Inter, and coach Cristian Chivu was sent off for protesting.
Inter were also unhappy when VAR didn’t give them a penalty after Giorgio Scalvini fouled Davide Frattesi.
After being knocked out of the Champions League by Bodo/Glimt, Inter have had a rough month: they failed to score in two straight games and lost their 15-game unbeaten streak last weekend to AC Milan.
Inter had 16 shots (11 on target) but wasted chances without their top scorer Lautaro Martinez. Marcus Thuram, Federico Dimarco, and Dumfries all missed good opportunities. Despite this, Inter still lead the league by 8 points, though AC Milan could reduce it to 5 if they beat Lazio on Sunday.
Atalanta have now gone 15 Serie A games in a row without beating Inter and sit seventh in the table, 4 points behind fourth-place Como.
