Aston Martin F1 Team’s poor start to the season has left Fernando Alonso in a “hard mental place”, according to team boss Adrian Newey.
The team is struggling with reliability problems with their Honda engine, which has stopped them from running properly during practice. Alonso was unable to take part in the first practice session for the Australian Grand Prix because of an issue with the Honda power-unit.
He later managed to complete 17 laps in the second session, but he was 4.933 seconds slower than the fastest driver.
Newey praised the 44-year-old two-time world champion, saying Alonso is still very quick, talented and sharp, and believes he should have won more than his two titles and 32 race wins.
However, Newey admitted the situation is mentally difficult for Alonso, especially since the team expected this season to be a rebuilding year and the current engine problems have made things even harder.
