Regragui Leaves as Mohamed Ouahbi Becomes New Morocco National Football Team Coach

Walid Regragui has left his role as coach of the Morocco national football team less than four months before the FIFA World Cup.

The 50-year-old made history when he led Morocco to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first African team to reach the last four.

Mohamed Ouahbi, 49, has been promoted from the under-23 team to become the new head coach. His appointment is similar to when Regragui took charge in August 2022 shortly before the World Cup.

The Moroccan football federation said the change is meant to help continue the development of football in the country.

Morocco also reached the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil but lost 1-0 to Senegal national football team after extra time in a dramatic match that included a missed late penalty by Brahim Diaz.

Regragui said the team now needs “a fresh face and new energy” before the World Cup.

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi thanked him for leaving a lasting mark on Moroccan football.

Morocco will start their World Cup campaign against Brazil national football team on 13 June, before also facing Scotland national football team and Haiti national football team in Group C of the tournament, which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
