England manager Sarina Wiegman says the team have been given reassurances that it is safe to play their Women’s World Cup qualifier against Ukraine in Turkey, despite growing conflict in the Middle East.
The match is being held in Antalya because Ukraine cannot host games at home due to the ongoing war with Russia. Recent US and Israeli attacks on Iran have increased tensions in the region, raising safety concerns.
Wiegman said England are in close contact with the government and local authorities and have not been told there is any danger. She added that if the situation becomes unsafe, the team would return home.
She also said it is “really sad” that Ukraine cannot play in their own country, but hopes the game can bring some unity and joy through football.
