Arne Slot says set-pieces are making the Premier League less enjoyable to watch

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says most Premier League games are no longer a “joy to watch” because there is too much focus on set-pieces.

This season, 27.5% of league goals have come from non-penalty set-pieces — one of the highest rates since 2009-10. Arsenal have been especially strong, scoring 16 goals from corners in their title push. Liverpool also scored three corner goals in their 5-2 win over West Ham United.

Slot said he prefers open, flowing football like Barcelona played 10 to 15 years ago. He feels referees in the Premier League allow more physical challenges on goalkeepers compared to other leagues like the Eredivisie.

Although he does not enjoy the heavy reliance on set-pieces, Slot admitted it is now the “new reality” of the Premier League and believes even youth teams may start focusing more on them.
