Wolves Hurt Aston Villa’s top-five Hopes and avoid Unwanted Points Record

0

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC boosted their survival pride and avoided an unwanted Premier League record by beating rivals Aston Villa FC 2-0.

Goals from Joao Gomes and Rodrigo Gomes lifted Wolves to 13 points, moving them past Derby County FC’s record-low Premier League total of 11 points from the 2007-08 season. Although Wolves remain bottom and look set for relegation, they secured just their second league win of the campaign.

Villa, who stay third in the table, missed the chance to go six points clear of Manchester United FC in fourth. Unai Emery’s side have now won only two of their last seven league matches and were also recently knocked out of the FA Cup by Newcastle United FC.

After a goalless first half, Wolves broke through in the 61st minute when Joao Gomes smashed in off the bar following a lay-off from Adam Armstrong. Villa brought on Tammy Abraham late on, but Rodrigo Gomes sealed the win in stoppage time.

The result is another setback for Villa’s Champions League push, while Wolves at least avoided finishing with one of the lowest points totals in Premier League history.
