When Manchester United travelled to Burnley for their first match after Ruben Amorim, most of the focus was on whether Bruno Fernandes was fit and if Darren Fletcher would start Kobbie Mainoo.
Few expected Harry Maguire to be involved. The 32-year-old had missed nine games with a thigh injury and had barely trained. He was only meant to be used in an emergency.
Maguire played 11 minutes in the FA Cup defeat to Brighton, helping Fletcher out before Michael Carrick officially took charge.
When Manchester City visited Old Trafford, Carrick took a “calculated gamble” by starting Maguire, even though he had trained for just a few days in nearly two months. Carrick admitted it was a risk physically, but said it showed how much it meant to Maguire.
