Tottenham captain Cristian Romero’s week ended in a “perfect storm” after a red card contributed to a 2-0 defeat at Manchester United.
The Argentina defender had already been in the spotlight earlier in the week for publicly criticising Spurs’ board over lack of investment. Thirty minutes into the Old Trafford game, Romero was sent off for a high tackle on Casemiro, leaving manager Thomas Frank to defend him.
Frank said Romero apologised to his teammates after the match and defended his passion, saying the attention on his social media outburst had been excessive. The foul came as Romero attempted a pass, but the ball deflected off Casemiro’s foot, and Romero struck him on the shin before playing the ball — a fine margin in the Premier League that ended up costing Spurs.
