John Terry frustrated with Chelsea’s choice of temporary manager

Former Chelsea captain John Terry says he is frustrated after being passed over for a temporary boss role following Enzo Maresca’s departure in January. Terry, who works part-time in Chelsea’s academy, wasn’t included in the staff taking charge for matches against Manchester City and Fulham.

Full-time Under-21s coach Calum McFarlane was chosen as caretaker, later replaced permanently by Liam Rosenior. Terry said he felt he should have been involved, especially since he was part of the Under-21s group.

Part of his frustration comes from holding top coaching qualifications, including a Uefa Pro Licence and a Fifa leadership diploma, while McFarlane only has a Uefa B Licence. McFarlane’s appointment was seen as more seamless due to his regular involvement with Maresca.

Terry has previously expressed disappointment at the lack of opportunities in coaching, despite his extensive experience captaining Chelsea and England. His current role at Chelsea is limited to academy work, with minimal contact with first-team players aside from academy graduates like captain Reece James.

In short, Terry feels ready and capable of managing at a higher level but is frustrated at being overlooked for bigger coaching roles.
