Ireland let Sri Lanka off the hook as costly mistakes in the field led to a 20-run defeat in their T20 World Cup opener.
Ireland’s spinners started well and restricted the co-hosts early, with George Dockrell dismissing opener Pathum Nissanka after a sharp catch from captain Paul Stirling. Sri Lanka were 104-4 after 16 overs and under pressure.
However, Ireland dropped five catches, including four late in the innings, allowing Sri Lanka to add 59 more runs and post a challenging total. That proved decisive.
In reply, Ireland struggled despite their effort, with Wanindu Hasaranga taking key wickets even while carrying a hamstring injury, as Ireland were bowled out for 143 with one ball remaining.
