Captain Virgil van Dijk says keeping Mohamed Salah at the club is very important

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk says he always wants Mohamed Salah to stay after the Egyptian helped the team beat Brighton 3-0 in the FA Cup. Salah, 33, scored and made an assist, moving Liverpool into the fifth round.

Earlier this season, Salah had said his relationship with manager Arne Slot had broken down, but since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations in January, he’s started every game, scoring twice and assisting four times. His current contract runs until 2027, but there’s still a chance he could leave, with Al-Ittihad and the Saudi Pro League reportedly interested.

Van Dijk, 34, praised Salah’s impact: “Mo is still a leader and important to have on the pitch. He gives the team more than just goals.” Salah has 252 goals for Liverpool since joining in 2017 and recently matched Steven Gerrard’s record for Premier League assists at the club (92).

“I always want Mo to stay,” Van Dijk added. “We’ve been through the highs and not-so-highs together. He’s a very important player for Liverpool and still sets the bar extremely high.”
