Macclesfield’s FA Cup dream ended in heartbreaking fashion as Brentford edged a narrow win at Moss Rose.
The sixth-tier side, who had already knocked out holders Crystal Palace, matched their Premier League opponents for much of the game. But with 20 minutes left, defender Sam Heathcote accidentally headed Aaron Hickey’s cross into his own net to give Brentford the lead.
Macclesfield had looked the more dangerous side early on, but tired legs and bad luck cost them in the end. Brentford now travel to West Ham United in the fifth round.
