Manchester United boss Marc Skinner says Ella Toone could return in time for February’s Champions League matches against Atletico Madrid. The England midfielder picked up a hip injury in late December, which kept her out of United’s goalless draw with Arsenal in the Women’s Super League.
Skinner said Toone is expected to be out for around six to eight weeks, with roughly half of that recovery time already completed. United play Atletico away in the last 16 on 12 February before hosting the second leg a week later, giving Toone a possible chance of featuring.
While she has been sidelined, United have strengthened their attack by signing Swedish striker Ellen Wangerheim from Hammarby on a three-year deal. Before her injury, Toone had played in every WSL match this season, scoring three goals and setting up five more.
Skinner stressed that the club will not rush her return, saying her health comes first. He is confident, however, that Toone will be back on the pitch before the end of the season.
