Mohamed Salah will return to Liverpool next week after finishing international duty with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). Liverpool boss Arne Slot said he is happy to have Salah back, joking that he would welcome him even if he already had “15 attackers” in the squad.
Salah has been away for a month with Egypt and will head back to Merseyside after Saturday’s third-place match against Nigeria. Before leaving for Afcon, the 33-year-old caused headlines by saying he felt unwanted at the club and that he had no relationship with Slot. Despite that, Slot says Salah remains very important to Liverpool.
Liverpool have done well without Salah, staying unbeaten in six games, but Slot will be glad to have him back, especially with Alexander Isak sidelined for months through injury. It is still unclear whether Salah will feature in Liverpool’s upcoming Champions League game against Marseille or wait until the league match against Bournemouth.
Slot also said discussions with Salah about their earlier fallout are private, adding that the focus now is on Salah finishing Afcon and returning to help the team.
