Newcastle United secured a Champions League last-16 play-off spot with a comfortable win over PSV Eindhoven at St James’ Park.
The home crowd set the tone before kick-off, and Newcastle quickly took control. Yoane Wissa scored his first Champions League goal after PSV made an early mistake, then set up Anthony Gordon for the second as Newcastle punished more sloppy defending. Gordon’s goal also matched Alan Shearer’s club record of six Champions League goals in a single season.
After the break, Harvey Barnes added a third to seal an easy win. Newcastle did suffer a setback when captain Bruno Guimaraes went off with an ankle injury, but the result lifted Eddie Howe’s side to seventh in the table.
With a play-off place secured, Newcastle can still qualify automatically for the knockout stages if they beat holders Paris St-Germain in their final league game. PSV dropped to 22nd in the standings.
