Manchester United reached the Women’s League Cup final for the first time after a narrow win over Arsenal.
The only goal came from an Arsenal mistake: goalkeeper Anneke Borbe passed the ball straight to Ellen Wangerheim, who set up Elisabeth Terland for an easy finish. Terland had also been denied a penalty earlier when Katie McCabe knocked her down in the box.
Arsenal’s struggles continued when Olivia Smith was sent off in the second half for a second yellow card. Substitute Melvine Malard missed a chance to make it 2-0 for United, firing over from close range.
Although Arsenal created more chances and controlled much of the play, they couldn’t trouble United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce.
United will face holders Chelsea, who beat Manchester City 1-0, in the final at Ashton Gate on Sunday, 15 March. Arsenal, seven-time winners, now face a second consecutive season without reaching the final.
