Darren Fletcher says he spoke to former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson before taking over as interim manager at Old Trafford. Fletcher wanted Ferguson’s “blessing” before stepping in following Ruben Amorim’s sacking.
“I don’t like to make major decisions without speaking to Sir Alex,” Fletcher said. “I have a really good relationship with him, so I wanted to run it by him and get his blessing. He echoed my thoughts and it was comforting to hear.”
Fletcher has focused on creating energy and spirit in the squad since taking charge. With limited time, he has mainly spoken to captain Bruno Fernandes and other senior players, while some squad members, including new signings and those at the Africa Cup of Nations, have not yet had one-on-one conversations with him.
He also reflected on dealing with outside criticism from pundits like Gary Neville, saying players have to accept it as part of being at Manchester United and learn to embrace the challenge.
