Cameron Norrie was defeated by Alexander Zverev in the third round of the Australian Open, ending Britain’s hopes in the singles in Melbourne.
Norrie put up a strong fight in the second set but eventually lost 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to world number three Zverev. This marked the fourth Grand Slam in a row where Norrie has been the last British player standing in singles.
The Briton always faced a tough challenge, having lost all six of his previous matches against Zverev, including clashes at last year’s Australian Open and Wimbledon. Despite showing determination, especially in the second set, Norrie couldn’t keep up once Zverev stepped up his game.
Norrie had strong support from the Melbourne Park crowd, particularly after his second-round win over American Emilio Nava. He even broke Zverev’s serve in the second set to level the match, but his momentum was halted in the third set. Zverev regained control and quickly wrapped up the fourth set, finishing with his 16th ace after nearly three hours on court.
Zverev will now face Argentine Francisco Cerundolo as he continues his bid for a first Grand Slam title. British coach Dan Kiernan said Norrie has the level to compete but needs a bit more power and consistency to challenge top players like Zverev regularly.
