Athletic Club staged a thrilling second-half comeback to shock Atalanta, hurting the Italian side’s hopes of automatically reaching the Champions League last 16 and boosting their own play-off chances.
Gianluca Scamacca gave Atalanta the lead with a first-half header, but Athletic turned the game around after the break. Gorka Guruzeta equalised just before the hour, substitute Nico Serrano added a second, and Robert Navarro scored a third past goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi.
Atalanta pulled one back late through Nikola Krstovic, set up by Ademola Lookman, but it wasn’t enough. The win leaves Athletic 23rd with one home game left against Sporting on 28 January, while Atalanta drop to 13th and now likely need a win against Union Saint-Gilloise to qualify directly for the knockout stage.
