Newcastle United do have money available for the January transfer window, but sporting director Ross Wilson says they will only buy players if the signings make sense for the club’s plans for next summer.
January is usually a tough time to sign players, but manager Eddie Howe said he would like to keep the squad fresh and be ready for anything. Howe and Wilson haven’t talked about new signings yet, but they have discussed the current squad a lot, and Newcastle’s scouting team has been looking at possible targets for the whole of 2026.
Wilson explained that the club spent over £100m in the summer, so they won’t do the same in January. However, if they feel it’s necessary, they can spend money. He said any signing must match the club’s bigger plan for next summer and the squad as a whole.
Since joining Newcastle from Nottingham Forest in October, Wilson has been reviewing players’ contracts. He found that Sandro Tonali’s contract situation is better than expected because Tonali extended his deal during his betting ban, meaning Newcastle can keep him until 2030 if they choose.
Meanwhile, Tino Livramento has interest from other clubs, and Sven Botman is entering the last 18 months of his contract. Wilson said Newcastle want to extend both players’ deals, but it’s too early to know if they will agree.
Chief executive David Hopkinson wants Newcastle to be "one of the world’s top clubs" by 2030. Eddie Howe said Hopkinson and Wilson are great additions who care about the club and bring ambition and energy.
